Dressing With Confidence After 50: A Body Positive Guide for Australian Women

Something shifts when you hit your fifties. Not in a bad way — in most ways, it’s the opposite. You know yourself better. You care less about what you’re supposed to wear and more about how you actually feel. But somewhere between knowing yourself and getting dressed in the morning, a gap opens up. The clothes that used to work don’t anymore. The fashion industry hasn’t kept pace. And finding pieces that feel genuinely right — not just technically your size — gets harder.

At FEMIQN, we’ve been manufacturing women’s clothing in Sydney for 40 years. Our customers are largely women over 40, 50 and 60, and we hear the same things over and over: the frustration of clothes designed for younger, smaller bodies; the indignity of being shuffled into a ‘plus size’ section with no consideration for actual fit; the relief — genuine relief — when something is made for a body like theirs. This guide is for those women.

The body at 50 is not a problem to be solved

The way fashion talks about dressing ‘for your age’ treats the mature body as a set of problems requiring management. Hide your arms. Minimise your middle. Don’t draw attention to your thighs. This framing is exhausting, and it’s wrong.

The body at 50 is not a problem. It’s a body that has done a great deal, and it deserves clothes that work with it — not around it. Body positivity, for women over 50, isn’t a trend or a social media movement. It’s a practical reality: you feel better when you wear things that fit properly, that suit how you actually live, and that let you move freely. That’s it.

Fabric is everything after 50

The single biggest contributor to feeling good in your clothes after 50 is fabric. Stiff, unforgiving fabrics that don’t breathe or move are uncomfortable at any age — but they become untenable as your body changes. What you want is fabric that moves with you, holds its shape through the day, and doesn’t require maintenance.

Our core fabric — a soft knit polyester-elastane blend — is the reason our TVSN customers call in asking for it by name. It has enough stretch to accommodate movement, enough body to hold its shape, and it washes and packs without creasing. No ironing. No dry cleaning. Just a fabric that works in real life.

For warmer months, our bamboo blend breathes naturally, regulates temperature and is particularly gentle on skin that’s become more sensitive with age.

Silhouettes that serve you

The silhouettes that work best for most women over 50 create shape without demanding a particular shape from the body underneath.

Wrap styles — the adjustable waist tie means fit is forgiving across a range of bodies. The V-neckline is elongating and flattering.

A-line cuts — fitted through the bodice, gently flaring below. This silhouette works across virtually all body shapes because it skims the hips and thighs rather than clinging.

Soft wide leg — wide leg pants in a soft knit drape cleanly, move well, and elongate the leg. Our pull-on wide leg styles are the ones customers reorder most.

Layering pieces — chiffon overlays, waterfall cardigans, longline vests and soft knit shrugs add coverage where you want it without adding bulk.

On arm coverage — a practical note

Three-quarter sleeves and long sleeves are consistently our most requested styles in sizes 18 and above. Finding these in quality fabrics at reasonable prices is genuinely hard. We build our range with this in mind — not as an afterthought, but as a core part of the collection.

Colour after 50 — wear more of it

The received wisdom that mature women should stick to neutrals is outdated. Colour draws the eye upward toward the face. Bold colours photograph more memorably. And wearing colour you love has a measurable effect on how you feel.

Our best-selling colours in the over-50 customer segment are cobalt blue, teal, fuchsia and burgundy — not beige. These are women who know what they like. Build a wardrobe with both reliable neutrals and deliberately chosen colour and you have the most options without the most clothes.

Size is not the point — fit is

Women over 50 often tell us they’ve spent years wearing the wrong size because nothing in the right size actually fit them properly. This is a failure of the fashion industry, not the body. When each size is individually patterned for the proportions of that size — not scaled from a sample — a size 20 fits like a size 20 is supposed to fit.

At FEMIQN, every size from 8 to 26 is individually patterned. That’s 40 years of Australian garment manufacturing applied to the question of why clothes don’t fit — and the answer, every time, is that they weren’t made for the body wearing them.

Dressing well is not vanity

Wearing clothes that fit properly, that reflect who you are, and that make you feel good when you walk into a room is a legitimate form of self-respect. You’re allowed to care about how you look. You’re allowed to want clothes made for your body. And you deserve a brand that’s been thinking about exactly these things for four decades.
