MATURE / OVER 50s

A-line silhouettes, empire waists, v-necklines and 3/4 sleeves are widely considered the most flattering for women over 50. They define the waist where it’s smallest, lengthen the frame, and provide arm coverage without bulk. Avoid stiff structured bodices that don’t move look for soft draping fabrics that skim rather than cling. Wrap dresses, midi length cuts and v-neck tops are universally flattering across mature body shapes.

Midi length (mid-calf) is widely considered the most universally flattering length for women over 50 — it elongates without showing knees, works with most footwear and suits most occasions. Maxi length is also very flattering. Knee-length is appropriate for casual wear but tends to be less universally flattering as we age. Above-knee lengths are typically too short for most over-50 wardrobes.

Yes if you’re comfortable with your arms, sleeveless is fine at any age. If you prefer arm coverage, look for cap sleeves, 3/4 sleeves or long sleeves. Many women over 50 layer sleeveless dresses with cardigans, shrugs or kaftans for arm coverage and warmth. There’s no rule wear what makes you feel confident.

Most women find that softer, richer colours flatter mature skin better than very bright or very pale tones. Navy, dusty blue, burgundy, sage, mauve, charcoal, taupe and warm cream are widely flattering. Black is universally chic. Avoid very pale pastels close to your face if they wash you out wear them lower on the body instead.
